(Bloomberg) --
Iraq ended its local wheat harvest season with output declining to 3.3 million tons compared with last year’s 5 million tons, Iraq’s grain board said in a statement.
The reason for the drop in output was the low level of rain this year especially in the country’s northern parts as well as the presence of Sunn pests.
Last year, the trade ministry and grain board announced that they reached self-sufficiency after government purchases from local wheat growers exceeded 5 million tons. Iraq, according to grain board data consumes about 4.5 million tons a year.
The Iraqi government for years has bought the local harvest at preferential prices to encourage farmers to grow crops.
